Background

Wuhan is selected as one of the 20 5G pilot cities in March, 2019 by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it needs to build more than 24,000 5G base stations by the end of 2020. China mobile, the largest mobile operator in China, decided to build 2000 5G base stations in 2019, and another 3000 sets in 2020.

 

Customer Requirements and Challenges

Large number of 5G base stations installed in different areas across the city within short time, China mobile needs to build or upgrade the metro transmission network firstly. How to build a transmission network with large bandwidth quickly is the demands of customers.

 

Bland Technologies Solution

As a long-term partner of China mobile, we analyzed customers advantages and dis-advantages, and noticed that the main challenge for China mobile is lacking fibers. As OTN technology can minimize optical fiber resources, we suggested them to deploy our OTN products for building the 5G metro transmission network. The proposal is:

1, Use OTN2800 platform with large rack in core nodes of network for data switching, and they can expand capacity by adding service cards in future.

2, Use Mini OTN platform in edge of the network for data aggregation.

3, Deploy the unified NMS (Network Management System) for whole network manage.

By using OTN platforms, China Mobile built up a 5G metro transmission network in Wuhan within 3 months on existing optical fiber. And they can expand bandwidth flexibly by adding service cards. The network management is also easy. By the end of 2021, China mobile had installed more than 24,000 5G base stations in Wuhan city.
